On the 2nd of July 2016 saw the 10th U10 national tournament take place at Goals soccer centre at Sutton. As usual, this year Raynes Park were able to enter two strong teams with the added pressure of being holders of the trophy.

The tournament kicked off under glorious sunshine with both teams doing well in their respective groups with both qualifying for the knock out stages which saw Raynes Park I draw Carshalton in the quarter finals a team that had previously drew with in the group stage. This time it was to be different outcome with Raynes park winning 4-0 to be the first to secure a semi final place.

Raynes Park II faced a tough encounter with Clapham LL, it was to be a bruising encounter with both teams giving their all, but eventually Raynes park proved to be the stronger and ended up 4-2 winners and progressed to the semi final.

The excitement of both teams reaching the semi final was suppressed slightly when the news filtered through that for the second year running the two teams from Raynes park would once again face each other in the semi final. The result seemed to to say that one team was better than the other with Raynes Park II winning by 6 goals to 3, but ethereality was that one team took all their chances whilst the other was inches away. Both teams had performed way above expectations and now we had a chance to retain the trophy in the final against a very strong Kingston team.

This year saw a change to the format with the final being played over two equal 10 minute halves which would test both teams of their energy levels and desire to win. The game kicked off with Kingston looking like the dominant team playing some great football which saw them take an early lead which they would keep to half time. At the interval the players received an inspired team talk from their managers Sam Lampton and Mark Elston reminding the guys that they had worked so hard to get to the final, that it was time to relax, use their heads and go and play great football.

The team talk seem to do the trick as the second half was all Raynes Park which saw them equalise half way through, this seemed to re-energise Kingston who looked like they may come back into the game, but RP were playing some great football at this stage but time was against them, the clock was ticking ever closer to penalties with possibly only one more opportunity before the final whistle. That opportunity fell to Raynes Park and with what turned out to be the last kick of the game scored the winner. A 2-1 victory against a very good Kingston team over twenty minutes of 5-a-side football was a fantastic achievement and a memory that will stay with all concerned for a very long time.

Both sets of players behaved impeccably and were a credit to Raynes Park Little League.

Congratulations to………..

Well done to all!!
