“Welcome To The 2016-17 Season Here At The Raynes Park Little League”
Message From The Chair
A big welcome to all as we embark on another season of little league football. The start of the 2016 -2017 season starts however with the sad news of the passing of Frank Adey the man that started it all.
I’m sad to say Frank passed away during the summer after a short illness and our condolences go out to his family. Frank was inspired by little league baseball during a trip to the USA, he brought that concept back and with foresight set up little league football here in Merton. The NEC are in discussion with Frank Adey Junior to ensure a fitting tribute to a man we owe a huge debt. The full story of LL history can be found on the website.
As ever the close season saw some volunteers leave us, in particular John Besagni who stepped down as Senior league Secretary to pursue promotion as a Surrey FA referee. I’d like to thank John for all his hard work during a difficult season along with all the other managers and assistants that gave up their spare time to help with the league, it is much appreciated.
However, as people leave we are fortunate to have new volunteers that step up and carry on the good work. So I would like to welcome Sam Lampton to the committee as Senior League Secretary. Sam has been with the league for many years, predominantly in the junior section where he has completely taken on board the concept of LL and is well equipped for the task ahead. Many thanks Sam for stepping up. Also a big thank you to all the new managers and assistants who have joined us this season we couldn’t do it without you!!!!
Last season’s end of season tournaments showed once again the fantastic spirit of our national teams with RPLL winning two out of the three tournaments which saw the boys U’10’s regain their trophy in dramatic fashion at Cheam goals, beating Kingston LL in the final with the last kick of the game to win 2-1. The senior U13 tournament saw the boys narrowly miss out on the semi-finals after hard fought games in a tough group and last but not least I was asked at short notice if RPLL could field an all girl team for a tournament at West Sutton LL, and after some frantic phone calls and one training session the girls took to the field and went unbeaten in 7 matches winning the final 2-0 against Morden LL. Huge congratulations goes out to all who participated you were a credit to the league. Well Done!!! (Full match reports can be found on the website).
Last season saw the league raise funds like never before, due to the shear hard work and determination from our, what seem to be professional fund raisers with the highlight being the Xmas raffle which was held after the managers and dads annual football match. Fantastic prizes were handed out in the presence of no other than Father Xmas himself, a memorable day was had by all. Also funds came in from our usual sources, Betty the bonus ball lady and of course the canteen crew!!! Many thanks for all your hard work.
The funds have been put to good use with the purchase of two fold away senior goals, which were well over due, the new ones are safer and more practical to set up on a cold winters morning which should make life a little easier. Other expenses have been the purchase of over 200 pairs of socks, 60 pairs of shorts, 30 new footballs and 3 new kits. A huge thanks to everyone who has either contributed or helped raise the money it is very much appreciated.
At the last AGM a vote was taken to elect a President of the league, it is a position that has always been there but unfortunately the last person to hold it is not known to any current serving committee member, so the search was on for a replacement. The search did not take long and by a unanimous decision Michael Browne was proposed and seconded and I am pleased to say, Mick as we know him accepted saying “it was an honour”. Mick brings a wealth of experience and a passion for LL second to none,
All that remains is say good luck for the season, enjoy it, remember we are all one club and are there for the kids. Please respect the referees and each other, lead by example, please emphasize the positives, encourage, support, ensure all the players play with a smile on their face regardless of the score, if you do all that the players will keep coming back week after week regardless of the result, because they just want to play football.
And lastly remember the phrase Frank Adey introduced back in 1968.
“Playing for fun is better than winning at all costs”!!!
